In
1992, my mother and I decided to learn how to make porcelain dolls with
a friend of ours who owns a doll shop and teaches classes. After making
a doll, we were hooked. Eventually we purchased our own kiln and molds
to pour and make our own dolls. Since then we have made well over 100
dolls.
In
1996, I was at a friends home and saw her porcelain figurine of Mary and
Joseph on their "Journey to Bethlehem". I loved it and the feelings
it stirred within me. I really wanted to have that figurine in my home.
Since I had the knowledge and equipment, I decided to give family members
this figurine as a Christmas gift and bought the mold.
Several
months before Christmas my mother approached me to see if I would be interested
in providing the Mary and Joseph figurine as a home making project for
her ward. This turned out to be fun and rewarding. I approached several
other wards in our area and presented the idea of providing greenware
that individuals could clean themselves during home making meetings. After
the greenware is cleaned I do the firings in the kiln and then deliver
the porcelain back to the Relief Society leaders for them to distribute
to the individuals. People loved the idea and since then I have provided
the greenware of about 25 various figurines for people to purchase and
clean.
In
1999, a lady in Indianapolis, Indiana who was originally from this area
came to visit family and friends. She found out what I am providing and
called to see if I would be interested in doing porcelain temples for
people in her ward in Indiana. Since the greenware is too delicate to
ship I decided to provide a finished product for them.
After
they received the figurines I got a call from her expressing their thanks
and appreciation. In talking with her, I came to realize that there are
many other parts of the country and world that do not have these types
of porcelain figurines easily available. Thus the idea was provided to
someday put up a website.
For
Christmas of 1996, I gave each of my three children a porcelain temple.
Our youngest daughter, Jessica, was 3 years old at the time. Little Jessica
loved her piece of porcelain. At night when it came time to go to bed,
instead of snuggling up to her new baby doll she instead snuggled up to
her new porcelain temple. This was quite impressive given that she loved
dolls so much and was used to snuggling up to them.
Each
year I have given each of my children a porcelain figurine for Christmas.
Last year I did not give them one. After Christmas, my children asked
me why I had not given them a porcelain figurine for Christmas and asked
if I would make them one.
In
the last seven years it has been so rewarding to have provided 1000's of
white porcelain figurines. The experiences I have had with my children
and others have helped me realize the importance of having beautiful things
with which to decorate our homes. This beauty has helped invite the spirit
of Christ into our home and lives.
